Was Mike Tomlin right about this destructive Steelers defense? | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the NFL’s proudest franchises — six Super Bowls, a legacy of toughness, and one of the most consistent head coaches in modern football. But according to one outspoken NFL analyst, that legacy may be crumbling before our eyes.

In a heated segment on ESPN’s “First Take,” analyst Stephen A. Smith tore into the Steelers following their latest loss, labeling the team as “lifeless” and “completely directionless.”

“The Steelers are awful right now,” Smith said bluntly. “There’s no fire, no rhythm, no accountability. Mike Tomlin’s leadership used to be the gold standard — but what I’m seeing now is a team that looks lost.”

Smith’s comments immediately sparked outrage among Steelers Nation, a fan base known for its fierce loyalty. Yet even diehards are starting to admit something feels off. Pittsburgh’s offense continues to sputter, their defense looks exhausted, and their once-feared home-field advantage has evaporated.

Multiple sources inside the organization have reportedly described growing frustration among players. One anonymous veteran told The Athletic, “We’re not communicating. We’re not executing. It feels like everyone’s waiting for someone else to make a play.”

At 4–6, the Steelers now face a brutal stretch that could officially end their playoff hopes. And while Tomlin has never had a losing season in his 17 years as head coach, even his staunchest defenders admit that streak is now in serious jeopardy.

Former Steelers linebacker Ryan Clark chimed in as well, saying on X (formerly Twitter), “I love Coach T, but this team looks broken. The standard used to be the standard. Now it’s just talk.”

Still, Tomlin remains unfazed. When asked about the criticism in his postgame press conference, he simply replied, “We’re not in the business of making excuses. We’re in the business of fixing problems. And that’s exactly what we’re going to do.”

But with tensions high, locker room morale low, and public confidence shaken, one haunting question now lingers over Pittsburgh: Is this finally the season the Mike Tomlin era begins to fade?
