Senator John Kennedy has once again proven he’s one of Washington’s most unpredictable voices — delivering a cutting one-liner that instantly went viral while announcing his support for President Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).
After weeks of withholding his vote, the Louisiana Republican stunned reporters Wednesday by declaring, “I intend to vote to confirm Mr. Travis Hill as FDIC Chairman. This is no country for creepy old men.”
The brutal quip — Kennedy’s trademark blend of southern wit and political sting — came as he revealed that Hill, Trump’s pick for FDIC chair, had finally provided a long-awaited report detailing how the scandal-ridden agency was cleaning up a deeply toxic workplace culture.
From skeptic to supporter
Until this week, Kennedy had refused to commit to confirming Hill, demanding full transparency over how the FDIC was addressing widespread sexual harassment, discrimination, and misconduct uncovered by a series of bombshell reports in 2024 and 2025.
That patience appears to have paid off. The newly released report, obtained through Kennedy’s office, outlined major leadership changes and disciplinary action inside the agency. According to the findings, 26 FDIC employees left their jobs in fiscal year 2025 after facing “substantiated allegations of misconduct” — either fired outright or resigning before they could be.
Hill, in a letter accompanying the report, promised that the old culture of impunity was gone for good. “I have instituted new leadership across the agency, and today not a single FDIC executive with substantiated allegations of misconduct remains,” Hill wrote.
The senator’s decision to back Hill marks a rare moment of reconciliation between Trump’s inner circle and one of the GOP’s most outspoken mavericks. But it also highlights Kennedy’s continuing crusade against sexual misconduct and abuse of power in federal institutions — a stance that has made him both admired and resented across party lines.
A scandal years in the making
The FDIC, the powerful agency that insures Americans’ bank deposits, has been under fire for more than a year over shocking revelations of harassment and favoritism under former Chair Martin Gruenberg.
A 2024 independent review by law firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton painted a devastating picture of the agency’s inner workings, concluding that the FDIC “failed to provide a workplace safe from sexual harassment, discrimination, and other interpersonal misconduct” for “far too many employees and for far too long.”
The investigation drew testimony from over 500 current and former employees, exposing what it called a “patriarchal and insular culture” where complaints were ignored and abusers were protected.
That report was followed by a scathing audit from the FDIC’s Office of Inspector General, which found that more than a third of employees surveyed had either witnessed or personally experienced harassment. Even more damning, the agency’s internal discipline records were “inconsistently documented and poorly tracked.”
The public outrage that followed ultimately forced Gruenberg to announce his resignation — though only after Trump nominated a successor.
Kennedy’s message hits home
Kennedy’s fiery statement — “no country for creepy old men” — instantly ricocheted through Washington, capturing headlines and sparking both praise and eye-rolling disbelief. Supporters called it a “mic-drop moment” that perfectly summed up the public’s exhaustion with powerful men avoiding accountability.
