The Los Angeles Lakers are searching for ways to maximize the Luka Doncic era, and naturally, Utah Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen was always going to appear on their radar. The 28-year-old All-Star, standing 7-feet tall with a rare combination of size and skill, has been linked to the Lakers as a potential addition to complement Doncic. But according to the latest reports, a shocking turn of events has spared Los Angeles from a trade that could have backfired spectacularly.

One major setback could leave them unable to find an adequate replacement via free agency, tying the remainder of Doncic’s prime to Markkanen’s availability.
Defensively, Markkanen isn’t necessarily an ideal fit either. A team built around three stars—Doncic, Reaves, and LeBron James—is already relying heavily on offense. Markkanen’s addition wouldn’t solve the defensive gap, and pairing three offensively-minded players without a defensive anchor is a recipe for trouble in the modern NBA.
