Megyn Kelly ignited controversy this week after questioning how convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein should be categorized, suggesting on her SiriusXM radio show that he may not fit the strict definition of a pedophile because he âliked the very young teen type.â
On the Nov. 12 episode of The Megyn Kelly Show, Kelly and guest Batya Ungar-Sargon discussed newly released emails from Epsteinâs correspondence, including messages in which he referenced President Donald Trump. While acknowledging Epsteinâs abuse of minors, Kelly attempted to differentiate between types of offenders.
â[Epstein] did like them young ⊠there were several young women ⊠who were minors, who were underage,â Kelly said. âThereâs just no question about that.â But she added, âTo my knowledge, he only liked girls in their teens. Thereâs a difference between a 15-year-old and a 5-year-old, you know?â
Kelly went on to assert that she had long been told by someone âvery, very closeâ to the case that Epstein âwas not a pedophile,â instead being drawn to âthe barely legal type.â She emphasized she was not excusing his conduct, calling the details âdisgusting,â but claimed Epstein preferred teens who âcould pass for even younger than they were.â
Her position shifted only after former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi alleged that investigators found âtens of thousandsâ of videos of child sexual abuse material on Epsteinâs computerâa claim Kelly said made her consider, for the first time, that Epstein âwas an actual pedophile.â Still, she expressed doubt about Bondiâs reliability and noted that no victims under 10âor even under 14âhad come forward publicly.
Epstein Emails Reignite Political Tensions
Kellyâs comments came as Congress released two sets of Epstein-related documents:
-
Democrats revealed a series of emails, several of which mentioned Trump.
-
Republicans followed with roughly 20,000 pages from Epsteinâs estate.
In one 2011 email to Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein referenced a victim spending hours with Trump, adding that Trump âhas never once been mentioned.â And in a 2019 email to biographer Michael Wolff, Epstein said the same victim was at âMar-a-Lago,â claiming Trump âknew about the girlsâ and had previously asked Epstein to step back.
The White House pushed back forcefully. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt accused Democrats of âselectively leakingâ emails to smear the president, adding that the unnamed victim referenced was Virginia Giuffre, who, she said, repeatedly stated Trump was not involved in wrongdoing.
Leavitt further insisted Trump had removed Epstein from Mar-a-Lago decades earlier âfor being a creep,â calling the revived allegations a political distraction from the governmentâs reopening after a historic shutdown.
Background on Epstein
Jeffrey Epstein died by suicide at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in August 2019 while awaiting trial on federal charges related to sex trafficking of minors. Prior to his death, he pleaded not guilty to one count of sex trafficking of minors and one count of conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking.
The newly released files continue to fuel debate over Epsteinâs crimes, his high-profile connections, and how the publicâand political worldâshould interpret his long shadow.
