Angel Reese, a star of the Chicago Sky, has just shocked the world by bluntly denouncing that the WNBA salary is actually a “scam”, while she and her colleagues have to make a living through outside advertising contracts.
In a private interview with a US TV channel, Reese revealed that her advertising income each year is up to millions of dollars, far exceeding the $81,000/year from her four-year contract worth $324,383 with the Chicago Sky. “We are dedicating all our energy on the court, but the actual numbers show that we are not valued as much as the male players,” Reese emphasized.
According to an inside source from the WNBA, Reese also revealed that players are limited in negotiating contracts, forcing them to “find a way to survive” with outside contracts, from McDonald’s, Amazon, Beats by Dre to Reebok – the brand that just released shoes bearing her name.
Not only that, Reese also accused that the referees in the WNBA have serious problems, leading to many games being unfairly called in favor of big teams, directly affecting the achievements and earning opportunities of the players.
A close source said that Reese and Napheesa Collier are preparing to send a petition to the US Department of Labor and the WNBA, requesting improvements in salaries, benefits and transparency in refereeing. If this happens, this will be the biggest crisis in WNBA history, threatening the reputation of the league and possibly causing many players to strike.
Angel Reese has not yet made an official comment on social media, but her loyal fans quickly created the hashtag #PayWomenPlayers, which has spread strongly on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram.
