NFL trade deadline: 3 avenues the Steelers could pursue | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Pittsburgh Steelers have suddenly emerged as one of the NFL’s hottest teams after a pair of statement wins, but with the trade deadline fast approaching, general manager Omar Khan faces a defining moment. Should he ride the team’s momentum as-is or make a few smart moves to solidify a playoff push? Despite the recent surge, there are still areas that could use help — notably wide receiver, defensive line, and the secondary.

1. Strengthen the Wide Receiver Corps

While George Pickens continues to prove himself as a legitimate No. 1 option, the rest of the receiving unit has been inconsistent. Kenny Pickett has lacked a reliable second target — someone who can create separation, convert key third downs, and stretch the field. Bringing in a veteran receiver could transform the passing attack and open up more opportunities for both the run game and tight ends.

Names like Hunter Renfrow of the Raiders, Curtis Samuel of the Commanders, and Darnell Mooney of the Bears have all surfaced as potential targets. Each offers something different: Renfrow’s precision, Samuel’s versatility, or Mooney’s speed. Any of them could give Pittsburgh the steady presence it needs in critical moments.

2. Reinforce the Defensive Line

The Steelers’ defensive identity remains their calling card, but depth up front is a growing concern. With Cameron Heyward still battling to stay fully healthy and Larry Ogunjobi handling heavy snaps, Pittsburgh could use a rotational defensive tackle to strengthen its interior defense — especially against the AFC’s top rushing teams.

A few mid-level trade options might fit: D.J. Reader from Cincinnati, Jonathan Bullard from Minnesota, or even Zach Allen from Arizona. Adding a dependable run-stopper would not only protect the linebackers but also free up T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith to continue wreaking havoc off the edge.

3. Add Experience in the Secondary

Though Minkah Fitzpatrick remains a superstar, the Steelers’ cornerback play has been uneven. Against teams with elite passing attacks, they’ve struggled to contain explosive plays. Acquiring a veteran corner could instantly stabilize the unit and bring much-needed leadership.

Potential trade candidates include Jaylon Johnson (Bears), Adoree’ Jackson (Giants), or Steven Nelson (Texans). Any one of them could upgrade the Steelers’ pass coverage in time for a playoff push.

Pittsburgh’s defense is fierce, the offense is improving, and morale is sky-high — but smart tweaks at the deadline could turn this team from dangerous to dominant. With Omar Khan at the helm, don’t be surprised if the Steelers make one more bold move to chase a deep postseason run.
