There is a point at which any political movement, if pushed far enough into ideological extremism, begins to turn inward. In recent months, parts of the ultra-conservative online ecosystem — particularly those steeped in MAGA-adjacent conspiracy culture — appear to have crossed that line. Their latest target is not a Hollywood liberal, a Democratic politician, or a progressive activist. It is Charlie Kirk, the late conservative commentator, and his widow, Erika Kirk.
What’s happening is not simply drama. It’s a perfect illustration of how conspiracy movements evolve: they intensify, they cannibalize, and eventually, they lose all sense of ideological loyalty.
Understanding the “Transvestigation” Phenomenon
To understand how we got here, it’s important to understand the phenomenon itself.
“Transvestigation” is a fringe, deeply transphobic conspiracy theory that sprang up around 2017 and has since spread through some corners of far-right social media. Its core belief: that many celebrities, athletes, and political figures are secretly transgender and that only “clever online sleuths” can spot the supposed signs.
The “evidence” is always pseudoscientific.
They analyze:
-
jawlines
-
collarbones
-
hip-to-shoulder ratios
-
“masculine energy”
-
childhood nicknames
-
and even skull shape — a throwback to debunked 19th-century phrenology.
Over the last several years, transvestigators have targeted everyone from Olympic boxer Imane Khelif, to Miss Universe contestants, to John Krasinski, to Brigitte Macron, to TikTok creator Dylan Mulvaney — and, in one surreal instance, even the Statue of Liberty.
In short: the “theory” has never required logic, consistency, or evidence — only obsession.
The Turning Point: Why the Far Right Is Transvestigating Its Own
What makes the current moment notable is not that conspiracists have latched onto another public figure — but who they’ve chosen.
Charlie Kirk was, in many ways, an icon of the MAGA era: influential, outspoken, deeply embedded in conservative activism. Following his tragic death in September, one might expect online conservative spaces to treat his family with reverence.
Instead, transvestigators have turned their attention to Erika Kirk, claiming she is secretly transgender — using images from her Miss Arizona pageant days as “proof.” In a Facebook group titled Transvestigation Disclosure NOW, posters insist her collarbone is “too straight,” her legs are “not feminine,” and her childhood description of herself as a “tomboy” is evidence of hidden identity.
Some are even claiming that because they cannot find public photos of her pregnant, she must be trans — a conclusion drawn entirely from body-shaming stereotypes and outright misinformation.
Others have extended the conspiracy to Charlie himself, suggesting his appearance was “feminine” or “emasculated,” implying Erika was his “transgender handler.” The leaps in logic are as offensive as they are nonsensical.
And yet, within certain corners of far-right social media, the posts are gaining traction.
Why Extremist Movements Turn Inward
Sociologists and extremism researchers have long documented a pattern:
When a conspiracy movement runs out of external enemies, it creates internal ones.
The motivations can include:
-
Escalation: Extremist spaces thrive on constant revelation and shock value; turning inward keeps the adrenaline going.
-
Purity Testing: The more extreme the ideology, the narrower the definition of “true believers.”
-
Grief + Paranoia: Charlie’s sudden, violent death created a void — and voids are fertile ground for conspiracies.
-
Fragmentation: Leaderless movements fracture, and factions begin attacking anyone who doesn’t fit their increasingly rigid worldview.
Charlie and Erika’s prominence ironically made them perfect targets once the movement’s gaze shifted.
The Danger: When Conspiracy Becomes Identity
The current wave of accusations isn’t just absurd — it’s harmful.
Transvestigation weaponizes body shaming, sexism, and anti-trans bigotry, all wrapped in a false sense of “investigation.” It retraumatizes real transgender people while attacking cisgender individuals based on arbitrary physical judgments.
And now, it is turning those tactics inward — proving that conspiracy culture has no loyalty, no boundaries, and no exit ramp.
The same machine that once attacked perceived ideological opponents is now devouring the very people it once praised.
