The Toronto Blue Jays are facing a difficult situation: star center fielder Bo Bichette has just turned down a $22.025 million qualifying offer. This has raised concerns that he could leave in free agency â and according to BlueJaysInsider, the team has two formidable replacements lined up.
One of the top options if Bichette leaves is Kyle Schwarber. Schwarber is a power hitter who is known for his home run-hitting ability, and last season he hit 56 home runs and 132 RBIs â huge offensive numbers.
While Schwarber doesnât play infield and canât fill the shortstop position, Toronto could use him as a designated hitter (DH). In this role, Schwarber could give the Jays a powerful offensive piece that would make up for much of the value Bichette would lose if he left.
Not only is Eugenio SuĂĄrez a power hitter, he is an interesting replacement option as he can play second base â a position that is flexible if Bichette leaves. According to the original article, SuĂĄrez has the ability to replace some of Bichetteâs offensive contributions with his high power output.

SuĂĄrez hit 49 home runs last season and impressed in the ALCS himself. However, due to his age, the team may only sign him to a short-term contract â which could serve as âtemporary safety netâ for the Blue Jays if Bichette decides to leave the center of the lineup.
Bo Bichette is an integral part of the Toronto lineup: he is not only a strong offensive player but also a mental pillar. His rejection of the qualifying offer has Jays management immediately preparing a plan B.
General manager Ross Atkins has seemingly been slow to make a big deal this offseason, with no major signings yet, leading many to believe they are waiting to see how Bichette fares before making a big move.
Using Schwarber as a DH helps the Jays maintain their offensive prowess, but at the cost of losing a full-fledged infield bat. With SuĂĄrez, while he can play in the infield, a short-term deal (if that) could be detrimental if they want to build for the long term.
Additionally, some analysts believe the Blue Jays have other or internal solutions: according to another BlueJaysInsider article, the team is also considering short-term options if Bichette leaves.
Bo Bichette is clearly a key player, but his rejection of the team’s offer has forced the Blue Jays to act. The names Schwarber and SuĂĄrez suggest the team isn’t just waiting, they’re already preparing strong replacements.
If they do lose Bichette, itâs a strategic move: not just a substitution, but a shift to ensure the offense and structure of the team remain strong. But at the same time, these decisions also raise questions about the Jaysâ long-term vision â are they betting on the future or just patching things up?
