The Dallas Cowboys are once again at the center of controversy — but this time, it’s not about their play on the field. Team owner Jerry Jones made headlines after telling The Wall Street Journal:
“There’s $100 billion present value with natural gas out there. That’s why I’m talking to you on the telephone rather than trying to fix our defense with the Dallas Cowboys.”
The comment, which many fans found tone-deaf amid the team’s defensive collapse, quickly went viral — sparking outrage, confusion, and plenty of memes. While some believed Jones was joking, others called it “a slap in the face” to Cowboys Nation.
Quarterback Dak Prescott finally broke his silence on the matter Thursday, offering a surprisingly measured response during his weekly media session.
“I don’t know the full context of it,” Prescott admitted. “I do know a piece of it, but being a fan, you just hear that or read that, that can definitely be frustrating.”
Still, Prescott tried to give his owner the benefit of the doubt:
“The guy has never really lied about who he is or what he’s trying to do. Hopefully he was talking about that one particular moment. Maybe in those five minutes is what he was alluding to.”
Then came the line that had reporters buzzing:
“Having a chance at a $100 billion opportunity — I think you might take five minutes as well to answer a call.”
Prescott’s tone was diplomatic, but his message resonated: Cowboys players, too, are hearing the criticism. The team’s defense currently ranks last in the NFL, and fans have been demanding urgency from ownership to address glaring issues.
Jones’ defenders argue the billionaire was merely joking — but in a season filled with disappointment, jokes about not fixing the defense were bound to land poorly.
“I could see how it could be frustrating,” Prescott concluded.
