The timing couldn’t be worse. New England’s offensive line has been inconsistent, and facing an Atlanta defense ranked among the league’s top 10 in run defense will be no easy task.
Stevenson’s absence also affects quarterback Drake Maye, who has relied heavily on play-action setups and check-down passes to the veteran back. With the Falcons’ defense expected to key in on the rookie QB, offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt may be forced to adjust the game plan significantly — potentially leaning more on Maye’s mobility and the short passing game.
The Patriots, sitting at 2-6, desperately need a win to keep faint playoff hopes alive. But without their offensive heartbeat in the backfield, Sunday’s matchup just got a lot more complicated.
“It’s a big opportunity for our young guys,” Vrabel concluded. “But we’ve got to step up — no excuses.”
