The Dallas Cowboys are staring down a crisis that few expected this deep into the season — and it has nothing to do with Dak Prescott’s accuracy or play-calling creativity. The issue? A defense that has completely collapsed. Once feared for its pass rush and physicality, Dallas now ranks dead last in the NFL in total defense, and the numbers are alarming.
Opposing quarterbacks are carving them up at will, averaging over 400 total yards per game. Once the Cowboys’ greatest strength, their defense has become the team’s biggest liability — and now, head coach Mike McCarthy faces a bold, almost desperate question: Should Dallas stop punting altogether?
Advanced analytics suggest that aggressive fourth-down decisions could be the key to salvaging the Cowboys’ season. With a defense that can’t get stops, keeping the ball in Dak Prescott’s hands might be their best — and only — defense.
“You can’t keep giving the ball back if you know your defense won’t hold,” one NFC executive said. “At some point, you trust your offense to finish what it starts.”
Prescott has been quietly efficient, and the offense ranks in the top half of the league in third-down conversions. But McCarthy’s conservative play-calling on fourth downs has fans and analysts questioning whether Dallas is wasting opportunities — especially in close games.
ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky didn’t hold back:
“If your defense is ranked 32nd, punting is surrendering. The Cowboys have to change who they are — or they’re done.”
The debate has torn through Cowboys Nation. Some fans demand boldness: “Stop punting, start fighting.” Others worry that recklessness will only dig the hole deeper.
Meanwhile, inside the locker room, frustration is reportedly mounting. Defensive captain Micah Parsons admitted after last week’s blowout loss:
“We’ve got to find our edge again. Right now, we’re not playing Cowboys football.”
With playoff hopes fading and pressure mounting, the Cowboys must decide — play it safe and keep losing ground, or gamble big and take control of their fate.
