The Toronto Blue Jays added to their roster again on Wednesday afternoon, selecting right-handed pitcher Spencer Miles in the major league portion of the Rule-5 Draft as part of baseball’s winter meetings.
Miles had previously been with the San Francisco Giants, and the Blue Jays had to pay the Giants $100,000 in order to select him. As long as he’s healthy enough to do so, Miles needs to remain on the Blue Jays roster all season in 2026, or he has to be offered back to the Giants for $50,000.
About Miles
The 25-year-old righty was a fourth-round pick of the Giants in 2022, having played his college ball at the University of Missouri. Injury issues have been a problem for him, as he missed all of 2023 and all of 2025 with various issues. He made only five appearances in 2024 before undergoing Tommy John surgery, which is why he missed all of 2025.
Lifetime, he’s 2-0 in 10 minor league appearances. He owns a 4.30 ERA. He did return to pitch in the Arizona Fall League this year.
Why this selection is surprising, part one
First, Miles has never played above Single-A. Is he really going to stick on a major league roster for an entire season? Especially one that has World Series aspirations yet again?
The Blue Jays don’t seem like the kind of situation for a player with these kind of questions to succeed in. Perhaps they hope the Giants won’t want him back and they can keep him in the organization should he not be able to last on the roster.
Why this selection is surprising, part two
Most of the conversation so far around the Blue Jays offseason has centered on the team having too much pitching, and now they’ve introduced one more to the mix. So far, the Jays outrighted useful reliever Yariel Rodriguez, and we’ve heard trade chatter around Jose Berrios. Do they even have room for Miles? Not at the moment, but we’ll have to see how the rest of the offseason plays out.
What’s next?
With the winter meetings over, the Jays will return back to Toronto and work on addressing the rest of the roster. They are looking to find another bat and remain a possibility for Bo Bichette, Kyle Tucker, Cody Bellinger, and they could be a trade fit for Arizona Diamondbacks star Ketel Marte, who is said to be available.
