AFTER SCANDAL HITS HOME: OHIO GOVERNOR’S GAMBLE ON GAMBLING SPARKS STATEWIDE RECKONING.1

December 2, 2025 by Quynh Chau Leave a Comment

In a stunning reversal, Mike DeWine — once a vocal supporter of legal sports wagering — publicly declared he regretted signing Ohio’s gambling-legalization law. The catalyst: a scandal involving two players from the Cleveland Guardians, now under criminal investigation for alleged betting-related activity.

DeWine’s disappointment is sharp and direct. He warned that the deep pockets of gambling companies, their aggressive marketing, and the ease of online betting have created an ecosystem far more dangerous than the law’s authors likely anticipated.

What makes his statement historic isn’t just the reversal — it’s the symbolism. A sitting governor disavowing legislation he once championed signals a seismic shift. Across Ohio, a debate long simmering under the surface now bursts into the open.

When Ohio first legalized sports betting, the promise was clear: regulated wagering would bring in revenue, attract tourism, and modernize the state’s gaming economy. But as real dollars began to flow, so did real consequences.

Reports of harassment toward college athletes surfaced, and soon the focus turned to professional sports. When irregular betting patterns coincided with on-field performance, alarm bells rang. Two pitchers from the Guardians — once trusted athletes — found themselves at the center of a betting scandal, forcing investigations and widespread fallout.

For many Ohioans, what had once seemed like a harmless way to cheer on their teams quietly became a reminder of the ethical and societal costs.

Rejecting calls for a full repeal — which he deems politically unlikely — DeWine zeroed in on one target: prop bets. These are wagers on specific in-game events (Who draws the first walk? How many strikes in this inning? etc.), often seen as the most addictive, manipulative, and risky forms of sports gambling.

He’s pushing regulators to ban them altogether in Ohio — a move that could ripple beyond baseball and reach every major sport in the state. DeWine argues that while gambling itself may be a fact of life, micro-betting on granular plays bottoms out the line between fan engagement and corruption.

Major League Baseball appears to have heard the warning. Days after the scandal erupted, the league’s authorized gaming partners agreed to cap bets on individual pitches and exclude them from parlays — a sign that the prop-bet model may be unraveling.

The governor’s U-turn has emboldened critics of gambling expansion. Religious groups, mental-health advocates, and fan communities that once tolerated regulated betting are now speaking up — warning of broken lives, addictive behavior, and the erosion of trust in sports.

For a state that just permitted widespread sports wagering a few years ago, the reversal feels jarring — but also necessary to many. DeWine’s stance has forced lawmakers to reevaluate their commitments, and sportsbook operators to confront the possibility that the “wild west” of micro-betting may be facing its final days.

A complete ban on sports betting seems politically unlikely at this point. But prop bets? They might be next. DeWine has signaled a willingness to keep pushing — through regulation, commission pressure, and appeals to leagues and unions — to eliminate micro-wagering entirely.

The immediate fallout may reshape how fans consume sports — fewer last-second wagers, tighter oversight, and a push toward restoring the purity of competition. For players and teams, it’s a warning: the scrutiny is real, and the margin for error is shrinking.

For Ohio, the question is more fundamental: was legalizing sports wagering worth the cost? Or did the state trade away something far more valuable than tax revenue — trust, integrity, and the soul of its pastimes?

What once looked like a modern gamble may now be remembered as a cautionary tale.
