Jude Bellingham has returned to training after undergoing shoulder surgery and has been included by coach Xabi Alonso in Real Madrid’s squad for their Champions League match against Marseille.
Bellingham has been named in Alonso’s 23-man squad for Real Madrid’s Champions League opener against Marseille this midweek. The English midfielder had been sidelined since July due to surgery for a persistent shoulder injury, an issue that has troubled him since 2023.
He began training again last week and has now been listed in Madrid’s matchday squad for the Santiago Bernabeu fixture. Coach Alonso expressed optimism about the 2003-born player’s return, saying on Friday:
“I want to be a bit optimistic and hope that Bellingham can return before October.”
Although he is not yet ready for official matches, the former Borussia Dortmund star has been participating in group training sessions, avoiding heavy contact to protect his still-healing shoulder. Alonso praised his pupil’s dedication during recovery and expressed hope that the midfielder will continue to make progress in the coming week.
Bellingham’s injury occurred in November 2023 when he suffered a shoulder dislocation. For nearly two years, he had played with a painful shoulder. He underwent surgery on July 16, shortly after Real Madrid were eliminated by PSG in the Club World Cup semifinals. Initially, medical experts predicted a 10 to 12-week recovery period, but Bellingham has recuperated faster than expected.
In addition to Bellingham, midfielder Eduardo Camavinga has also been called up to Real Madrid’s squad after missing most of the season due to an ankle issue. Endrick is another player ready to return from injury.
