“I am extremely excited for this amazing opportunity at Webb School, and I cannot wait to meet with the players and get to work,” Quarles said in a school release.
Quarles was one of the winningest high school football coaches in the country at Maryville, going 250-16 in his 18 seasons. He won 11 state championships and had separate winning streaks of 74 games from 2004-08 and 44 games from 2013-15.
“In George Quarles, we have found an exemplary person and remarkable coach to lead Webb’s football program into the future,” said athletic director Dan Gill in a press release. “Known not only as one of the most successful high school football coaches in the state of Tennessee, but also as a leader and mentor who cares deeply about the young men under his leadership, George brings with a him a firm understanding of our mission − both the important traditions of our Spartan football program and the excellence of Webb as an institution.”
Quarles left the high school realm in 2016 to become tight ends coach at Furman before becoming the Paladins offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
He was hired by East Tennessee State to lead the program in 2021. ETSU fired Quarles after two seasons with a 6-16 record.

Webb announced on Nov. 6 that Don Mahoney would not return as coach.
Mahoney took over program in 2023 and led the Spartans to a 10-2 record and a quarterfinal appearance in the DII-AA TSSAA playoffs. Webb went 5-5 in 2024.
He was hired to replace David Meske, who had been the coach at Webb for 38 seasons and 40 years with the program. Meske won 281 games and seven of the school’s eight state championships — including three in a row from 2012-14.
