The Toronto Blue Jays just made one of the boldest, most unconventional moves of the offseason — and hardly anyone saw it coming. With the clock ticking on their 2025 international bonus pool allotment, the Jays spent the last of their funds on a complete unknown: 17-year-old left-handed pitcher Celwin Hurkmans from the Netherlands. Standing 6-foot-6, Hurkmans has signed a minor league deal with Toronto, yet when fans search his player profile, almost nothing comes up beyond his full name: Celwin Willem Adrianus Theodorus Hurkmans.
The audacity of the move hasn’t gone unnoticed. John Schneider, the Blue Jays’ director of player development, acknowledged the risk in a recent interview. “Deciding to spend a huge sum on an unknown player is an extremely bold move, but it’s also a strategy Toronto is willing to take — sometimes the things nobody expects become the hidden weapons that can shock the competition,” Schneider said.
So who is the newest Blue Jay, and why are the team’s executives betting big on him? The answer lies in Hurkmans’ performance overseas. He’s never pitched in North America, which explains the near-blank profile page. But he is considered one of Europe’s top young prospects, alongside Tjin Fredrikze, who recently signed with the New York Yankees. Hurkmans played for DSS Haarlem in the Netherlands’ second-highest baseball league, helping his team clinch a division championship — a feat that earned him the attention of Toronto scouts.
This signing was also a practical decision. The Blue Jays were required to spend their international bonus pool money by December 15; any remaining funds wouldn’t roll over into 2026. That created a “use it or lose it” scenario, and Toronto opted for a high-risk, potentially high-reward strategy. Rather than settling for a well-known but less explosive signing, they chose a player with untapped potential and near-limitless upside.
Hurkmans will become the second Dutch player in the Blue Jays’ system, following Sem Robberse. Robberse was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals at the 2023 deadline for Jordan Hicks and is currently playing in Triple-A within the Cardinals organization. Toronto now hopes Hurkmans can continue the lineage of European talent contributing to their farm system — though his path to North American professional baseball remains uncertain.
Typically, international teenagers begin their careers in the Dominican Summer League to ease them into professional play. However, the Jays could also choose to station Hurkmans in Dunedin or the Florida Complex League, reducing travel and gradually introducing the young southpaw to the rigors of pro ball. His exact pitching repertoire, velocity, and makeup remain largely unreported, making him a complete enigma. But at 6-foot-6 and only 17, the Blue Jays are clearly playing the long game.
Toronto has already been aggressive in bolstering their pitching depth this offseason, investing both domestically and internationally. Hurkmans represents the latest move in a series of calculated risks aimed at securing a competitive edge for years to come.
