HOUSTON — A heavy silence fell over the Houston baseball community on Monday as José Cruz Sr., one of the most beloved figures in Astros history, revealed that he had been diagnosed with cancer and was now preparing for the toughest fight of his life.

For decades, Cruz’s name has been synonymous with Houston baseball. Known for his blistering speed, smooth left-handed swing and iconic “rainbow” jersey era, the two-time All-Star marked Astros history with more than 1,900 hits and countless defining moments from 1975 to 1987. But on this day, the cheers and celebrations gave way to shock, sadness and an outpouring of love.

The 77-year-old shared the news in a brief but emotional statement released by the Astros. “I have been diagnosed with cancer. Like baseball, life presents us with challenges, and this is one I will face with courage and faith,” Cruz said. “I am grateful to my family, the Astros, and the fans who have supported me over the years.”

In just a few minutes, tributes and prayers poured in from across the league. Former teammates, coaches, and fans all joined in support of the man affectionately known as “Cheo,” who became one of the first true icons of the team during the club’s heyday in the late 1970s and 1980s.

Cruz was more than just a baseball player — he became a cultural bridge and a community leader. A native of Puerto Rico, he inspired a generation of Latino players who followed in his footsteps, paving the way for stars like Carlos Correa, José Altuve and Yordan Alvarez.

“José Cruz is the soul of Houston baseball,” said former Astros teammate Nolan Ryan. “When you think of leadership, determination and grace, you think of José. And now, he needs us as much as we need him.”

Even after retiring, Cruz never really left the field. He served as a coach and special assistant for the Astros for decades, mentoring young players and always being a presence around the clubhouse. His No. 25 jersey, retired by the team in 1992, hangs proudly at Minute Maid Stadium as a reminder of his lasting impact.

News of Cruz’s diagnosis rippled through the Houston community, where he remains a beloved figure. Fans gathered outside Minute Maid Stadium, leaving flowers, signs, and handwritten notes of encouragement. On social media, hashtags like #PrayForCheo and #AstrosLegend quickly trended, uniting fans in a wave of support.

Astros owner Jim Crane issued a statement shortly after Cruz’s announcement: “José Cruz is like family to us. He is a literal Astros legend, and we will be with him every step of the way. Our prayers and love go out to him and his family.”

For a man who has built his legacy on resilience—fighting pitchers, pressure, and the weight of a team—this latest challenge may be his biggest yet. Those who know Cruz, however, believe he will face it the same way he approaches every at-bat: with quiet determination and unwavering faith.

“Cheo always taught us to never give up, no matter the score,” Astros Hall of Famer Craig Biggio said. “Now it’s our turn to remind him that he’s not fighting alone.”

Whatever the outcome, José Cruz Sr.’s place in Astros history is unshakeable. His legacy is etched not only in the record books but also in the hearts of every Houston fan who ever cheered his name.

And as he begins this fight, one thing is certain: just as he once carried Houston on his back, now this city—and the baseball world—will carry him.
