New York, NY – In a moment that brought the sports world to tears, Anthony Rizzo – veteran star of the New York Yankees and former Chicago Cubs icon – has just announced an unprecedented decision: to donate his entire lifetime MLB pension to establish a cancer support fund.
For Rizzo, this is not only a gesture, but also a journey back to his own past – when, at age 18, he faced Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
“I sat in that hospital chair, my hair falling out, my body exhausted from chemotherapy. I know what it feels like. And I vowed to myself, if one day I have the strength and ability, I will help those who are going through the same path I went through,” Rizzo shared, choking up.
A Promise Turned into Action
More than a decade after being declared cancer-free, Rizzo is not only a 2016 World Series champion with the Cubs, a multiple All-Star, but also a survivor with a heart for the community.
The new fund, called “Rizzo’s Second Chance Fund,” will be built entirely from his entire MLB pension, which he received in full after a 13-year career. The fund will focus on:
Providing direct financial support to patients undergoing cancer treatment.
Covering travel and lodging expenses for patients’ families.
Investing in medical research to find better treatments.
“I was given a second chance in life. Now, it’s time to give it back to someone else,” Rizzo said, his eyes welling up with tears but shining with determination.
A Hero On and Off the Field
Rizzo’s actions quickly created a wave of emotions on social media. The hashtags #RizzoForever and #HopeWithRizzo were all over Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
One Cubs fan wrote: “You brought the Cup to Chicago, now you bring hope to thousands of families. Rizzo is more than just a player, he is an angel.”
A 15-year-old cancer patient, who received encouragement from the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation in the past, choked up: “I wrote to you when I started chemotherapy. Today, knowing you are giving your pension to us, I believe there is light at the end of the tunnel.”
A Timeless Legacy
In the world of sports where contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars are signed every year, Rizzo’s decision is not only rare – it is almost unprecedented. He turned the fruits of his career into a source of life for the community, an act that many likened: “This is Rizzo’s greatest home run.”
When asked if he had any regrets, Rizzo simply smiled:
“The money may be gone, but the memory of how you helped others will last forever. That’s the real legacy I want to leave.”
A Real Life Hero
Anthony Rizzo once overcame cancer to stand on the field. Now, he once again wins with his heart – bringing faith and life to thousands of others.
In MLB history, perhaps few have left such a complete legacy: a warrior, a champion, and above all, a compassionate hero.
Anthony Rizzo – the biggest swing of his life, was the swing for life.
