Max Scherzer is getting closer to returning to the Toronto Blue Jays lineup, according to Blue Jays Insider. Scherzer has received a cortisone shot and is continuing treatment after sustaining a right thumb injury. Manager John Schneider said he is “pretty optimistic” about the former Cy Young player’s progress.
Scherzer has been doing heavy bullpen sessions recently, a key step in his road to recovery. If his progress continues, he will begin throwing with live hitters before being assigned to rehab.

According to TSN, he is expected to throw rehabilitate in Florida, then return to the Blue Jays’ base in Texas.
However, things are still very much on a “one-day-a-day” basis: the possibility of a recurrence of the injury remains, and management will be closely monitoring Scherzer’s safe return.
Before his injury, Scherzer had thrown just three innings for the Blue Jays in his debut against Baltimore.
He was subsequently placed on the long-term IL list.

If Scherzer returns on schedule, it would be a major boost for Toronto’s pitching unit, which values experience and consistency — especially during this crucial part of the season. But his long-term future with the Jays remains in question: experts say his chances of getting a contract extension are slim (around 30%) due to his age and potential medical risks.
