TORONTO — Toronto Blue Jays legend Buck Martinez has shocked the sports and social community by announcing a $1 million donation to cancer support funds. The donation is considered a personal effort, based on Martinez’s own painful experience in battling the disease.
Martinez, who was diagnosed with leukemia (CLL) and later lung cancer, shared in the announcement: “I’ve been through the worst. I know how they feel — the fear, the loneliness, the moments when there’s no hope. This donation is my way of saying to patients: you are not alone.”

The $1 million will be distributed to the Susan G. Komen Foundation and several other nonprofit organizations that provide comprehensive support from medical treatment, psychological care, education, nutrition, and community awareness programs. Martinez emphasized that the goal is not just to directly help patients, but also to inspire and give hope: “I want them to know that there is someone who cares, that there is a light ahead.”
The Blue Jays legend’s actions have received strong support from teammates, the fan community, and medical organizations. A colleague at the team said: “Buck is not just a legend on the field — he is a symbol of strength and gratitude in life. This action proves that his will and heart go beyond any athletic achievements.”

Martinez temporarily stepped down from his MLB commentary position to treat cancer, during which time he faced chemotherapy, radiation, and constant health checks. However, his resilience and faith in the community helped him return to work, while also nurturing his dream of supporting those who are battling similar battles.
Fans were moved by Martinez’s move. On social media, many expressed: “Buck Martinez not only threw the ball well — he also threw hope to hundreds, thousands of patients. This story will resonate forever.”
The $1 million donation is considered one of Martinez’s largest charitable contributions since he announced his battle with the disease. This not only shows personal gratitude but also reflects the social responsibility that a sports legend can create.

Buck Martinez’s story is a living testament to the strength of will and human spirit. He is not only a legend on the field but also a “warrior off the field,” using his experiences to spread hope, love and strength to those in the storm of illness.
With every dollar donated, with every patient helped, Martinez said: “No matter how cruel the disease, hope and humanity are always stronger.” And it is with that spirit that the Blue Jays legend continues to write an emotional chapter that goes beyond any sports achievement — a “home run” of gratitude and kindness.
