TORONTO – The tension between the booth and the dugout just got personal. Toronto Blue Jays analyst Buck Martinez has officially responded to Aaron Boone’s pointed jab after the Yankees manager dismissed his September criticism as “wrong.” And the veteran broadcaster didn’t hold back.

“Look, I’ve been around this game for over 50 years,” Martinez told reporters on Saturday morning. “If a team’s sloppy on defense, doesn’t run the bases well, and relies too heavily on home runs — I’m going to say it. That’s my job. If Aaron doesn’t like it, that’s fine. But facts are facts.”

Boone’s initial outburst came during his pre-ALDS media session at Rogers Centre. While discussing his team’s late-season turnaround, he couldn’t resist taking a swipe:

“Contrary to some thoughts up here, we’re a really good team… I know Buck [Martinez] had some thoughts. He’s wrong.”

It was a direct reference to Martinez’s on-air remarks earlier this month, when he criticized the Yankees’ fundamentals:

“They make a lot of mistakes in the field, they don’t run the bases well, and if they don’t hit home runs, they don’t have a chance to win.”

The exchange has since lit up baseball Twitter, with fans divided between Boone’s defiant loyalty and Martinez’s no-nonsense honesty. “Buck just tells it like it is,” one Toronto fan wrote. “Boone’s just mad because it hit close to home.” Yankees supporters, meanwhile, praised Boone for “standing up for his clubhouse.”

Martinez, who spent decades as a catcher, coach, and now one of the most respected voices in Canadian baseball, insisted his criticism wasn’t personal — but rooted in what he’s seen between the lines.

“When you play 162 games, the numbers don’t lie,” he said. “The Yankees have power. They always will. But if they want to win in October, it’s not about who hits the farthest home run — it’s about who plays the cleanest baseball.”

As both teams prepare to clash in the ALDS, the verbal duel has only added fuel to an already fiery rivalry. Inside the clubhouse, players are pretending to ignore the noise — but sources close to the Yankees say Boone’s comments were deliberate, a message to “protect the team’s pride” heading into enemy territory.

Whether it was motivation or media bait, one thing’s for sure — the ALDS spotlight just got brighter. And as Buck Martinez put it with a smirk:

“If they prove me wrong on the field, I’ll be the first to say it. Until then… I’ll keep calling it how I see it.”

Game 1 is tonight in Toronto — and suddenly, it’s not just the players under pressure.
