ST. LOUIS — A painful fall to the San Francisco Giants has officially ended the 2025 season without a chance at a postseason. But less than 24 hours later, the gloomy atmosphere at Busch Stadium suddenly exploded with a shocking statement from owner Bill DeWitt Jr.:
“What can’t be solved by money will be solved by a lot of money.”
This statement immediately became the center of attention in the American baseball world. Many inside sources said that DeWitt Jr. had “green-lighted” a bold plan: launching a series of million-dollar contracts to recruit top MLB stars, at the same time building a coaching staff of the most experienced coaches.
“St. Louis fans have waited too long. It’s time for the Cardinals to return to their rightful place as an 11-time World Series champion,” DeWitt stressed. “We’re going to bring in the best players, spare no expense, and ensure Busch Stadium is ready to explode again in the coming Octobers.”
Unprecedented Ambition
According to early estimates from experts, the Cardinals’ budget could be raised to a record of more than $250 million for the 2026 payroll — a figure that would put them back among the most “spending” teams in MLB. The rumored list of targets includes top pitchers and hitters, along with the ability to negotiate blockbuster trades.
In parallel, DeWitt Jr. also asked the board to look for veteran managers to build a solid foundation for the locker room, after the team was heavily criticized for its lack of courage in do-or-die games.
Fans Divided
DeWitt’s “money can solve everything” statement has created a wave of fierce debate. A section of fans expressed excitement: “If we need to buy back trust, do it. We want to win immediately,” one fan wrote on the Cardinals Nation forum.
However, there are also skeptical opinions. Many experts believe that money does not always guarantee success, as evidenced by big teams like the Mets or Padres who spent hundreds of millions but still failed miserably. “Cardinals need a smart strategy, not just a deep wallet,” commented an ESPN analyst.
What future for the Cardinals?
Despite the controversy, it is undeniable that DeWitt’s bold statement and plan have ignited a flame of hope in the hearts of St. Louis fans. After long years of obscurity, the Cardinals seem ready to enter a new era, where money will be the weapon to restore the aura.
The big question now is not whether the Cardinals will spend big, but how, and which stars will be brought to Busch Stadium next winter?
One thing is for sure: when owner Bill DeWitt Jr. declares “a lot of money” is the key, MLB will be wary. Because the Cardinals no longer want to be on the outside of October games again.
