Chicago – The sky above Wrigley Field seemed quieter this morning. The blue and white flags were not flying as high as usual, and the stands seemed to be silent as well. Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, a small but great woman in the hearts of Chicago Cubs fans and the Loyola community, has passed away at the age of 106. This sad news has plunged the entire city into endless grief.

“We’re deeply saddened by Sister Jean’s passing. She was loved by Cubs fans and all who knew her,” – Chicago Cubs wrote on their official social media page. Tens of thousands of comments, tens of thousands of emoticons flooded that post – as a farewell to the person the entire city considered a beacon of faith.

Born in 1919, Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt has seen nearly the entire modern history of American baseball. But to Chicago, she is more than just a witness – she is a spirit.

At 98, she still appears at Cubs games, wearing a blue jacket with “CUBS” written on the front and a beaming smile. Even in a wheelchair, she always raises her hand, and the stands respond with a resounding “Sister Jean!”

She is known not only for her passion for sports, but also for her positive spirit, strong faith, and unconditional love for people. At every game, she prays for the players on both teams – “because God loves them both,” she once said, smiling kindly.

When the Chicago Cubs won the 2016 World Series – ending a 108-year curse – Sister Jean was one of the first people the team called to share in the joy. She burst into tears, saying:

“God has waited long enough, and today he is smiling with us.”

Since then, she has become part of the team’s spiritual symbol. Whenever the Cubs are in trouble, the image of Sister Jean in a blue jersey, hands raised in prayer, appears all over social media as a belief that “the Cubs will never be alone.”

More than just a Cubs icon, Sister Jean is also a living legend at Loyola University Chicago – where she served for decades as a spiritual advisor.

When news of her death was announced, thousands of students, alumni, and Chicagoans brought flowers, candles, and Cubs shirts to the school gates to pay their respects.

One student wrote on a small sign: “She prayed for us all, now we pray for her.”

Meanwhile, an elderly Cubs fan wept in front of Wrigley Field:

“Every time I saw her smile, I believed the Cubs would win. Now, even though she is gone, I know she will still be watching from heaven.”

Sister Jean is gone, but her spirit will live on—in every swing, every cheer, and in the hearts of those who believe that baseball is more than a game, it is faith, family, the miracle of life.

Chicago lost an icon, but the world was reminded of a simple truth she once said:

“Age is just a number. Faith and love – that’s what keeps us young.”

Today, the entire city bows its head. But in the distance, Sister Jean is surely smiling – in her familiar Cubs jacket, looking down at Wrigley Field, where those she loved continue to fight, still believe, and still sing:
“Go Cubs Go.”
