On the field, Cody Bellinger – the star who just joined the New York Yankees – is famous for his powerful swings. But off the field, he has just moved the fan community with another “win,” not from the field, but from his kindness.
The story begins when Bellinger was walking near Central Park on a rare morning without practice. On the corner of the sidewalk, a skinny, matted dog was shivering, looking for some food from the trash. Many people walked by, shook their heads, and walked away. But Bellinger stopped. He knelt down, gently extended his hand, and waited patiently until the dog approached, his eyes filled with sadness and fear.
“In that moment, I suddenly remembered the feeling of being underestimated, lost, and just hoping someone would believe in me,” Bellinger shared later.
That same day, Bellinger took the dog to a veterinary clinic. The vet confirmed that the dog had no collar, no identification chip, and showed signs of being a long-time wanderer. “He didn’t hesitate for a second. As soon as he heard that, Cody said, ‘I’m taking him home,’” a clinic employee recalled.
A few days later, the image of Bellinger holding the dog – now named “Bronx,” after the player’s new hometown – went viral on social media. Fans shared it widely, with comments like: “You’re not just a Yankee, you’re a true Bronx hero.”
Since then, Bronx has become a part of Bellinger’s family life. His wife often shares moments of Bronx running around the yard or curling up on the sofa in their small apartment in New York.
In particular, Bellinger also plans to cooperate with several animal rescue organizations in New York to launch the “Home Run for Paws” program, calling for the adoption of homeless cats and dogs and supporting rescue stations.
“In baseball, I want to contribute to the Yankees. But off the field, I hope the Bronx will remind me that sometimes the greatest victories come from kindness,” Bellinger said.
Cody Bellinger’s story not only makes Yankees fans proud, but also lights up a message: kindness can turn a small life into an endless source of inspiration. With the Bronx by his side, Bellinger’s new journey with the Yankees seems to have found the most special “teammate.”
