The New England Patriots may be looking to add some serious firepower to their backfield — and a familiar name from Dallas is reportedly on their radar.
According to multiple league sources, the Patriots have been linked to a potential trade for an ex-Dallas Cowboys running back who once eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark — a move that could give New England’s offense a much-needed spark.
While the player’s identity has not been officially confirmed, several insiders have pointed to Tony Pollard as a possible target. Pollard, who rushed for over 1,000 yards with the Cowboys in 2022, is currently in a contract year and could be available if his current team decides to retool before the trade deadline.
For the Patriots, the move would make sense. Since the departure of Damien Harris, New England’s running game has lacked consistent production outside of Rhamondre Stevenson. Adding a proven, explosive runner like Pollard would immediately give rookie quarterback Drake Maye another weapon — and take pressure off an inconsistent offensive line.
“The Patriots are looking for versatility — someone who can run, catch, and create chunk plays,” one AFC executive told The Athletic. “Pollard fits that mold perfectly. He’s a game-changer when he’s healthy.”
The Patriots’ offense currently ranks near the bottom of the league in total yards and rushing efficiency, something head coach Jerod Mayo and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt are desperate to fix. Pollard’s ability to turn short gains into long runs could provide the jolt New England’s attack has been missing since the days of prime Sony Michel and LeGarrette Blount.
However, the trade wouldn’t come cheap. Dallas values Pollard’s speed and leadership, and any deal would likely require draft capital or a young defensive player in return.
Still, with the Patriots sitting in the middle of a rebuild, acquiring a dynamic veteran could accelerate their offensive evolution — especially if Maye continues to show promise as a franchise quarterback.
If the rumors are true, New England might be preparing to make one of the most intriguing midseason trades in recent memory — one that could reshape their identity and revive their once-dominant offensive brand.
