Eight weeks into the 2025 NFL season, frustration may be brewing inside the Dallas Cowboys organization — and it’s centered around rookie running back Jaydon Blue.
According to team sources and recent sideline observations, the Cowboys’ coaching staff has grown increasingly concerned with Blue’s limited production and slow development. After entering the season as a promising mid-round pick expected to bring explosiveness to the backfield, the former Texas Longhorn has struggled to find consistency in both rushing and pass protection.
Blue has logged minimal touches through the first half of the year, averaging under 3.5 yards per carry and failing to carve out a reliable role behind starter Tony Pollard. Coaches reportedly want to see more urgency and sharper reads from the rookie, particularly in short-yardage situations where Dallas has lacked punch.
“The potential is there — no doubt,” one team insider told NFL Network. “But the Cowboys expected him to be more ready to contribute by now. The leash isn’t long when you’re trying to win games.”
Sources indicate that the coaching staff has discussed possible adjustments to the depth chart if progress doesn’t come soon. That could include elevating a practice-squad back, signing a veteran free agent, or even exploring a late-season trade before the deadline.
Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer was asked earlier this week about Blue’s development and gave a carefully worded response.
“Jaydon’s got all the tools,” Schottenheimer said. “He’s learning what it takes to play at this level. We expect him to keep growing — but we also expect results.”
The Cowboys entered the season hoping to establish a more balanced offensive attack, but inconsistency in the run game has kept pressure squarely on quarterback Dak Prescott and the passing unit. If the ground game doesn’t improve soon, the team could be forced to make a move — not just for production, but to send a message.
Blue remains confident and committed, according to those close to him, but the reality is clear: the Cowboys want to see more — and fast.
With playoff positioning on the line and patience running thin in Dallas, the rookie’s next few games may determine not just his role, but his future with the team.
