CHICAGO — As the Chicago Cubs struggled through a series of chaotic games, their form wavered and the pressure mounting from their playoff rivals, manager Craig Counsell delivered a powerful message: “This is still our opportunity to do something special.” It was not only a wake-up call, but also a promise that the battle is not over.
Today, before a press conference, Counsell looked straight at reporters, his voice calm but firm: “There are times when things don’t go well, there are times when you feel like you’re on the edge. But that’s baseball. Those moments — I think we have to be strong enough to get through them.”
Tough times – but not hopeless
The Cubs are going through a challenging stretch: a series of valuable point losses, defensive lapses and an inconsistent offense, especially after the midseason break. Key players like Kyle Tucker and Seiya Suzuki have lost their touch, while young players like Pete Crow-Armstrong are also facing psychological pressure when their swings are not paying off.
But the team is still in the Wild Card race and fighting to close the gap with the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central. Counsell stressed that focusing on results is not always the answer – it’s the process, the daily steps, the belief.
Determination from coaches and players
There is no yelling or criticism in the locker room. Instead, Counsell praises discipline, the continued practice, the small details—like a player missing a base, or a blocked shot—each of which is an opportunity to learn. “Sticking to the things that get you results… and being OK, it might not happen at the exact time you want it to,” he says.
Players like Tucker, Suzuki, and the team’s younger members are told to keep their heads down, to stay focused on each inning, each pitch, and not let setbacks drag them down. They know that if each player does their part, the team can continue its winning streak.
When the Opportunity Awaits
Counsell doesn’t deny the pressure, doesn’t shy away from the challenge. But he also reminds us that the season is still there. Even if there are dark days, there’s still a chance to create a special moment—a spectacular breakthrough, a comeback campaign that becomes legendary. The Cubs, despite their criticism, have never been out of reach.
“When you’re at a really high point, it’s not easy to come down. But we believe in what we’ve built – trust, accountability, discipline and fighting spirit,” Counsell inspires. And that’s a promise: no matter how tough tomorrow gets, the Cubs won’t give up.
