Daulton Varsho, once hailed as the Toronto Blue Jays’ “secret weapon,” is now trying to recapture the explosive form that once wowed fans. After returning from a serious shoulder injury and undergoing surgery, Varsho not only had to physically recover, but also restructure his swing to regain his form.

One of the notable changes is his bat placement. Previously, Varsho would hold the bat horizontally during pre-swing preparation, but now he’s returned to a vertical stance – which creates natural torque and a more efficient attack. When loading, he’s eliminated the traditional “toe tap” and replaced it with a lighter footwork that synchronizes the movement, allowing him to generate more speed and power at impact.
Not only in terms of technique, Varsho is showing a clear difference in efficiency: the highest “xwOBA” (expected hit factor) rate in his career, along with a “hard-hit” rate of about 44% – higher than ever before.
On the defensive field, Varsho is still one of the best names. Right in his return game after injury, he had a spectacular catch, making both the coach and his teammates admire.
In fact, since 2022, Varsho has led the MLB in “Defensive Runs Saved” (DRS) and “Outs Above Average” (OAA) – showing his influence in protecting the outfield.
On the other hand, Varsho’s offensive power is also highly appreciated. After returning, he immediately showed explosiveness: many home runs, making an important contribution to the Blue Jays offense.
The highlight was a grand slam in the sixth inning at the end of the season, giving the team a big boost in the race for the AL East.
In addition, Varsho also shared about his future in Toronto: currently on a one-year contract, he is still considering staying long-term if a reasonable offer comes in – which shows his determination to become a pillar of the Blue Jays.
Daulton Varsho is on a journey to reassert his position: not only as a power hitter, but also as an irreplaceable defensive warrior. Will his fire rekindle to continue to be a “different” fulcrum for the Blue Jays? Time will tell.
