NEW YORK — In a revelation that stunned the American sports world, former New York Yankees pitcher CCSabathia has officially announced that he is battling a serious degenerative disease — a disease he has endured for years, silently, still playing for his teammates and fans.
Sabathia, 43, was once a powerful figure on the Bronx pitching mound, with more than a decade of playing for the Yankees and achieving many outstanding achievements. But few people know that in the final years of his career, he had to deal with degenerative knee disease — a condition in which the joints break down and the cartilage wears away — while still trying to maintain his form. Sabathia recently said:
“I kept quiet, not wanting to worry my teammates… but every time I stepped onto the field, my knees were screaming, and my heart was still fighting for the pinstripes.”

While playing for the Yankees (2009–2017), Sabathia was a pillar of strength for the team—from the 2009 World Series championship to the pressure-filled seasons that followed. Now, news of his illness has awakened fans: the former Bronx defender is still fighting… but in addition to his role as a player, he is now fighting his own body.
The Yankees shared in a statement from the organization:
“We have always respected Sabathia not only for his pitching, but for the quiet dedication he has shown. This news deeply touched everyone at the Yankees.”
According to a rheumatologist, severe osteoarthritis — as Sabathia describes it — is “a progressive disease that cannot be completely reversed, only managed.” A blog dedicated to sports & bone & joint specialists once wrote that Sabathia “is suffering from a disease whose very mention brings a question mark to the career and future health of every elite athlete.”
Sabathia also said that at the end of last season, he had to spend many private sessions with a specialist, and had considered retiring early, but because of a promise to Bronx fans and a commitment to his teammates — he continued until the end of his contract. Now the announcement is an emotional release:
“If I could, I would like to throw my last shot not because I had the strength — but because I deserved it.”
As soon as the news spread, old photos of Sabathia in Yankees uniform were widely shared: his powerful throw, his hug with his teammates, his smile amidst the storm of public opinion. On social media, the hashtags #RespectSabathia and #SilentWarrior began trending, with audiences expressing their admiration:
“He hid his pain so we could see him as a strong symbol. Now we know he is stronger than we ever thought.”

Perhaps few would have thought that behind the lights of Yankee Stadium, a pitcher who once initiated the “Let’s go!” call is now struggling with pain every day without the media knowing. Sabathia is not asking for sympathy — he just hopes his message is enough to remind: behind the halo, each athlete has his own journey, and sometimes… it is a battle the public has never seen.
And in today’s news — as baseball continues to spin… CC Sabathia’s story seems to make us stop, look back, and feel that: success on the field and health off it are both battles to be won.
