“Seeing every single intensive care unit (PICU) full — every single day a battle to save these kids — haunted Chelsea and me deeply,” Freddie told ESPN. “So many doctors and nurses are still giving hope, healing, and life to these kids day and night.” It was that scene — not the stadiums filled with lights — that inspired him to do something more meaningful. “CHOC saved Maximus’s life,” he said, “and now we want to help save other kids’ lives.”
It all began in the summer of 2024, when Maximus suddenly collapsed: from leg pain, he quickly became paralyzed — on a ventilator, on a feeding tube — and diagnosed with GBS. The Freemans immediately sensed this was more than just a medical accident — it was a fight for their lives. Maximus spent eight terrifying days in the ICU before starting to recover.
As news of their son’s condition spread, Dodgers fans, teammates, and MLB fans came together—with #MaxStrong tweets, prayers, and an outpouring of support. It was a powerful reminder: despite his star status, Freeman was—first and foremost—a father, a father willing to sacrifice everything to save his son.
When the crisis passed, the Freemans didn’t choose to forget. Instead, they turned their grief into hope for others. The $1 million they gave to CHOC wasn’t for show—it was to increase the health care capacity of children battling the disease, to help worried families not feel as alone as the Freemans did.
