Houston, TX — In his postseason press conference, General Manager Dana Brown made headlines when he called Cam Smith a “pitch plane” and asserted: “His talent is off the charts. He can be a star someday.”
Smith, 22, and the centerpiece of the Kyle Tucker trade, had a promising first season with the Astros – but also showed some gaps. Brown couldn’t hide his high expectations: “We saw flashes last season, now it’s time for him to turn that flash into fire.”

Cam Smith was selected in the first round of the 2024 MLB Draft by the Cubs, then quickly traded to the Astros as part of the big Kyle Tucker deal.
In the spring of 2025, Smith made an immediate impact: two home runs in a practice game after just a few at-bats, prompting Brown to describe him as an “aircraft carrier” in the lineup.
However, entering the regular season, Smith faced challenges. In the first 75 games, he hit very well (.292 AVG, .801 OPS) but clearly declined in the last 59 games (.479 OPS).
Brown was blunt: “The talent is obvious. But he has to be more consistent, overcome the downs.”
GM Dana Brown has made the direction clear:
“He can be a starter, but he is not guaranteed a place in the lineup unless he makes significant progress.”
“We need him to be consistent – offensively and defensively – like a true star.”
“We expect him to turn his potential into performance and overall impact.”

Smith has also had to learn many positions: from third base to right field, under pressure as a key part of a big deal. Brown said: “He feels that pressure – and I believe he will respond.”
Brown’s public “naming” of Smith as a future factor has caught the attention of the entire MLB. For the Astros, Smith is not just a young talent – but could be a new generational icon after Kyle Tucker.
An analysis from experts assessed: if Smith finds stability, good defensive skills plus speed and power, he can absolutely become an All-Star for many years.
Astros fans also reacted strongly. The hashtag #SmithRising quickly spread, bringing with it both expectations and challenges: “He was chosen to replace Tucker – now it’s time to prove himself worthy” – one fan posted on social media.

Cam Smith has had some brilliant moments in his first year with the Astros. But Dana Brown, the man behind the big decisions, has made it clear: “He’s going to be a big star – if he can turn his potential into reality.”
Smith is on the cusp of a major milestone: the transition from “prospect” to “star.” The Astros and fans are waiting for it – and the 2026 season will be the turning point.
If Smith makes it, people will talk about the personnel change not just as a big trade – but as “the moment an icon is born.”
