Although his 2025 season was difficult — posting a 7.01 ERA in 24 appearances and dealing with knee and thumb injuries — he brings to Cleveland a history of success and a diverse pitching mix that could flourish with the Guardians’ development staff.
Originally drafted in the ninth round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the New York Mets, Holderman made his Major League debut in 2022. He quickly impressed with a 5-0 record and a 3.81 ERA in 24 games that season, earning his reputation as a reliable bullpen arm early in his career. He later moved to the Pirates, where he posted a 3.52 ERA over 113 appearances from 2023–24, demonstrating both durability and effectiveness out of the pen.
However, 2025 proved to be a setback. Plagued by injuries — including a right knee sprain and right thumb inflammation — Holderman’s performance suffered. His high ERA and elevated WHIP in limited action reflect a year in which command and consistency were elusive. Despite those struggles, the Guardians see potential value in a rebound given his track record and tools.
The Guardians have been transparent about their desire to strengthen their relief corps this offseason. Holderman joins recent acquisition Connor Brogdon, and the organization also added young arms like Peyton Pallette via the Rule 5 Draft, in a concerted effort to bolster late-inning pitching depth.
