BREAKING: HEART & HOME RUNS FREDDIE FREEMAN’S $1 MILLION PLEDGE TO SUPPORT KIDS AFTER SON’S GBS BATTLE.C1

Last summer, Freddie Freeman and his wife Chelsea faced one of the scariest ordeals a parent can ever know: in July 2024, their three‑year-old son, Maximus, was diagnosed with Guillain‑Barré syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder that caused rapid paralysis. Maximus was rushed to hospital, placed in the pediatric intensive‑care unit, and had to be intubated — on a ventilator, fed through tubes, unable to move.

Doctors at the Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) worked around the clock to stabilize him. After days of uncertainty and intensive care, Maximus began to improve — slowly but steadily. Within days, he was taken off the ventilator, and over ensuing weeks and months started the long road toward recovery.

The experience left a deep mark on the Freeman family. In May 2025, overwhelmed by gratitude and moved by the tireless work and compassion of CHOC’s medical staff, Freddie and Chelsea made a powerful decision: they donated $1 million to the hospital. Their gift was meant to support other children and families who face serious health challenges — to give back, to offer hope, to strengthen care for the most vulnerable.

“Seeing every room full in the PICU each and every day impacted Chelsea and I deeply,” Freeman told reporters. “Getting to know the doctors, nurses, and care teams — how they show up each day to bring healing and hope to kids and their families — was inspiring. CHOC saved Maximus’s life.”

The donation isn’t the Freemans’ first act of generosity — but it’s certainly among the most meaningful. In the past, they contributed to community efforts, including building a new baseball clubhouse at Freddie’s alma mater high school.  Now, their charitable efforts take on a whole new level of poignancy: born from personal struggle, hope, and survival.

For fans, teammates, and colleagues, the news resonated deeply. During Maximus’s hospitalization, the team rallied around the family: players and staff wore “#MaxStrong” shirts to show solidarity. Upon Freddie’s return to the field, he was greeted with overwhelming support — standing ovations and messages of encouragement greeted him as he resumed play.

More than a gesture — this donation is a statement. It speaks to the idea that sometimes, the greatest contributions from a professional athlete happen off the diamond. For Freeman, whose bat and glove have won championships and accolades, this act may be his most important swing yet: one that helps ensure other children receive the care, hope, and second chance his own son was given.

In a world where fame and success often overshadow humanity, Freddie and Chelsea Freeman’s decision shines as a heartfelt reminder: that compassion, gratitude, and community — they matter most of all.
