Houston – The atmosphere in the Houston Astros locker room suddenly became quiet when outfielder Jake Meyers announced the sad news: his grandmother – who cared for and raised him throughout his childhood – had passed away at the age of 86.
To Meyers, she was not only a relative, but also the “silent hero” behind every step of his baseball career. When his parents were busy making a living, it was she who took little Jake to his first practices, sat for hours in the hot sun just to wait for him to finish a Little League game. It was also she who first told Meyers that he could make his baseball dream come true.
In an emotional Instagram post, Meyers choked up and wrote:
“Grandma, you didn’t just raise me, you raised my dreams. Everything I’ve achieved today is because of your love, patience, and faith in me. Every time I step onto the field, you’re with me.”
Meyers’ passing immediately received sympathy from the baseball community. Teammates from Kyle Tucker to Alex Bregman sent their condolences. Astros fans across social media also left thousands of comforting comments, many calling Meyers’ story a testament to the power of family love.
“Jake was a warrior,” the Astros head coach said at a press conference. “But today, he’s just a heartbroken grandson who lost his beloved grandmother. We stand behind Jake, not just as teammates, but as a family.”
For Meyers, this season has taken on a whole new meaning. He said he will play with his heart in her, considering every swing, every sprint off the field a tribute.
As the Astros enter a crucial phase of the season, Meyers’ story reminds everyone that behind the spotlight are always silent sacrifices from loved ones. And now, Meyers’ grandmother – the person who planted the seeds of that dream – will forever be an undying source of motivation for him on the next journey.
