BREAKING – Javy Báez Writes Emotional Letter to Baseball, Reflecting on a Life Saved by the Game and a Future Defined by October Dreams in Detroit
DETROIT — Baseball is more than a game to Javy Báez. It is the thread that runs through his life, from the streets of Bayamón, Puerto Rico, to the bright lights of Comerica Park in October. This week, the Tigers’ shortstop shared a powerful open letter titled “Dear Baseball” that reads like both a love story and a testimony to survival.
A Game That Saved His Life
In the letter, Báez does not shy away from describing how baseball kept him grounded during his youth. “You taught me how to love, how to have fun, and could even say you saved my life,” he wrote. Growing up surrounded by challenges, Báez said the sport gave him direction and purpose. It was not just a pastime but an escape from the problems in the streets and a guide that led him onto the right path.

He explained how the game created a family bond, moving his own family to Jacksonville so he could pursue the dream of reaching the majors. “You were a blessing to us and the driving force that helped me focus on helping my family and especially her,” Báez said, referring to his late sister, Noely, whose memory has long fueled his career.
Tattoos, Championships, and Detroit
Báez recalled his first tattoo, inked in honor of his love for baseball and his belief that the game would carry him to the major leagues. He reflected on the unforgettable moment of celebrating a World Series title and the lessons that came from both winning and losing.
“You also brought me to Detroit, the Motor City… to play for an organization with a fan base eager to win,” he wrote. To Báez, playing in October is the ultimate reward, the time when every victory feels eternal and every loss cuts the deepest.
Lessons of Resilience
For Báez, baseball mirrors life in Detroit: a story of resilience, recovery, and refusing to give in when challenges mount. “It’s about adapting and recovering from adverse situations, about getting through difficult moments with perseverance,” he said. In many ways, the Tigers’ climb back into playoff contention reflects the same qualities he has carried throughout his career.
He credited coaches, teammates, and especially the fans for walking alongside him through every step of this journey. “You have been with us day by day, and that’s part of what makes this season so fun for us,” Báez said.
The Road Ahead
While much of his letter looked back on how baseball shaped his life, Báez closed with a reminder that his story is not finished. “Baseball has given me so much… and the best part is yet to come,” he wrote.
For Detroit, those words carry weight. The Tigers are in the midst of a competitive stretch, fighting for an October to remember. And if Báez’s letter is any indication, the man who owes everything to the game is ready to give everything back — one swing, one play, one postseason at a time.
