HOUSTON — In a move that has shocked the sports world, Houston Astros icon Jose Altuve has turned down an offer to build a bronze statue in his honor outside Minute Maid Park, instead donating the money that would have been spent on the project to help those in need in Houston.

According to the Houston Chronicle, the plan to erect an Altuve statue — worth more than $350,000 — was proposed by a group of donors and fans after the Astros finish the 2025 season. But instead of agreeing, Altuve left everyone speechless by sending a handwritten letter to the organizers, with the simple message:

“I don’t need a statue. I just need to see Houstonians smiling.”

A decision that left the city in tears

The news was confirmed Saturday morning and quickly spread across the country. Astros representatives said Altuve had proposed using all of the money to establish the “Houston Hope Fund,” a fund to help families who lost their homes due to natural disasters, children who cannot afford to go to school, and workers struggling after the economic crisis.

“Jose said that true glory is not in the bronze statue, but in how many people you lift up,” shared team president Jim Crane. “We are proud to have a captain like that.”

From Venezuelan boy to the heart of Houston

Jose Altuve, born in Maracay, Venezuela, was once rejected by many baseball academies because he was “too small.” But it was his extraordinary willpower that made him one of MLB’s greatest icons — an eight-time All-Star, two-time World Series champion, and a series of records while playing for the Astros.

But behind the powerful swings and emotional runs, Altuve remains the same humble man he was when he first arrived in Houston. “He never forgot where he came from, and why he got where he is today,” said teammate Alex Bregman. “Jose always said that the titles weren’t as important as the fact that he could help someone.”

“Don’t build a statue, build a belief.”

Altuve’s words, shared in an exclusive interview with ESPN, brought thousands of fans to tears.

“I know people love me, and I know they want to pay tribute,” he said. “But the statue will just stand there. I want to do something — I want to help someone get up.”

According to the Astros Foundation, Altuve’s “Houston Hope Fund” is expected to help more than 1,000 families in its first year, including rebuilding homes damaged by the storm and providing scholarships to inner-city children.

A legend of the heart

As the news spread, a series of MLB players and former players sent their praise. Aaron Judge wrote on X (Twitter): “Statues fade. Kindness lasts forever. Respect, Altuve.”

Meanwhile, reporter Jon Morosi called the move “one of the best moments in MLB this decade.”

Outside Minute Maid Park last night, instead of erecting a statue, hundreds of fans left flowers, candles and handwritten signs: “Thank you, Jose – our champion forever.”

Under the yellow lights, amid the soft melodies blaring from portable speakers, perhaps the whole city of Houston understood — Jose Altuve didn’t need a statue to become a legend. He was already a monument in everyone’s hearts.
