Maryland Governor Wes Moore just blew up MAGA’s last midterm hope with a thunderous announcement: his state will add new Democratic-leaning congressional districts to counteract the aggressive Republican gerrymandering sweeping across red states. And he made one thing crystal-clear:
“Donald Trump is not going to choose what our democracy looks like.”
Speaking at the Texas Tribune Festival, Moore said that if states like Texas are manipulating the electoral map mid-decade to secure GOP power, then Maryland will not stand by idly.
“If parts of this country are going to go through a mid-decade process to determine whether or not they have fair maps, then so will the state of Maryland.”
His message was unmistakable:
If Trump wants an electoral arms race, Maryland will respond in kind.
Trump Triggered the Fight — Blue States Are Responding
Earlier this year, Texas Republicans — at Trump’s direct urging — pushed through a redistricting overhaul that added five new Republican-leaning districts, aggressively weakening the voting power of Black and Latino communities. Their goal was obvious: lock in MAGA control ahead of the midterms.
Democratic-led states like California quickly fired back with redistricting reforms of their own.
Now Maryland is stepping onto the battlefield.
Moore revealed that Trump has been “picking and choosing” which states undergo mid-decade redistricting — suing California to block its maps while openly supporting Texas’ extreme partisan overhaul.
“He didn’t call all of us. He called some of us,” Moore said.
“Why should some states do this while others sit on their hands?”
“He Can’t Win on Policy — So He Rigs the Game.”
Moore didn’t mince words about Trump’s motives:
“He knows he can’t win on policies. He changes the rules. He rigs the game.”

He vowed that Maryland will have fair, representative maps in place by next November — maps that reflect the real voices, hopes, and ambitions of the people of his state.
“I will make sure that come next November, Maryland is voting with fair maps… a representative democracy that reflects the will of the people.”
