A big shock has just happened in St. Louis: Masyn Winn, the team’s bright young star, has officially been ruled out for the rest of the 2025 season due to a right knee injury. This information was confirmed by head coach Oliver Marmol after the 8-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on September 13.
Winn has been struggling with a knee injury throughout this season. He was given three days off to recover, but when he returned, moving and performing basic movements such as hitting or catching became extremely difficult. He shared: “I tried to hide the pain, but in the end, I had to stop to avoid making the condition worse.”
Previously, the medical team had cleared Winn to continue playing, but his condition did not improve. Now, he will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery in the winter and is expected to make a full recovery.
Despite the early end of the season, Winn’s performance in 2025 was impressive. He played in 129 games, batting .253 with 9 home runs and 51 RBIs. Notably, he only made 3 errors and led all shortstops in the league with a .994 fielding percentage – a strong candidate for the Gold Glove award.
Coach Marmol affirmed: “Winn is a gem of the team. He is our future.” Meanwhile, Winn also expressed gratitude to the coaching staff for giving him the opportunity to play, despite knowing that his health was at risk.
Although he could not continue playing, Winn still decided to accompany the team on the final trip of the season. He wanted to stay to cheer on his teammates and see them play their best. “I want to stay, not because I can’t play, but because I want to be a part of this team,” he said.
Despite the playoffs being out of the question, the rest of the season promises to be a big one. The Cardinals will face the Cincinnati Reds on September 15, 16 and 17, followed by the Milwaukee Brewers on September 19, 20 and 21, before closing out the season with a trip to the San Francisco Giants on September 22, 23 and 24, and finally a trip to the Chicago Cubs on September 26, 27 and 28.
Despite the disappointing season, Masyn Winn has proven his talent and fighting spirit. He is a big hope for the future of the St. Louis Cardinals.
