BREAKING NEWS: Cal Raleigh – From Underrated to “60 Home Run Supercatcher,” Rewriting MLB History.y1

Seattle – One September night, the atmosphere at T-Mobile Park exploded. Cal Raleigh, the catcher once considered a “second-tier slugger,” had just hit his 60th home run of the 2025 season, breaking every barrier ever placed on a catcher. When the ball left the bat, the crowd of more than 47,000 people rose to their feet, and in that moment, the Seattle Mariners were celebrating more than just a victory – they were witnessing history being rewritten.

Raleigh not only became the first catcher in history to hit 60 home runs, but also the first switch-hitter since Mickey Mantle (1961) to reach that milestone.

With 60 HR, 125 RBI, and an OPS of nearly .950, he dominated the entire league, far surpassing big names like Aaron Judge or Shohei Ohtani in pure destructive power.

From April to September, Raleigh’s every swing was filled with the smell of gunpowder. At 28, he not only surpassed Salvador Pérez (48 HR, 2021) – the former catcher record holder – but also forced the experts to rewrite the concept: “Catcher cannot be a great slugger”.

“He is Johnny Bench of the data generation, Mike Piazza with a Seattle warrior mindset,” – a rival coach admitted.

Just three years ago, Raleigh was nearly relegated to AAA after a disastrous strikeout streak. But instead of falling apart, he came back with a stronger swing, a higher launch angle, and an iron will. Since then, Raleigh has become the heartbeat of the Mariners – both in the locker room and on the field.

In the spring of 2025, the Mariners signed him to a six-year, $105 million contract, making Raleigh the highest-paid catcher in team history. And in the first year of that contract, he responded with a legendary season.

“I don’t need to prove who I am,” Raleigh said after his 60th home run. “I just need to prove that Seattle never picks the wrong person to trust.”

Cal Raleigh Leaves Legends Behind as His Record-Breaking Season Rewrites What's Possible for Catchers

While the media is full of praise for his offensive prowess, experts emphasize: Raleigh is a rare all-around catcher.

In 2024, he won the Gold Glove and Platinum Glove, and led the AL in caught stealing rate (~39%).

Mariners pitchers call him a “silent strategist” – someone who always knows how to read the game, call pitches, and throw opponents off rhythm.

The combination of power and tactical IQ makes Raleigh the rare catcher who has won both the defense and the slugging board – something even Johnny Bench has only accomplished once in his career.

By the end of the 2025 season, Raleigh will have hit more than 150 career home runs and two consecutive 100+ RBI seasons – a feat only Mike Piazza and Yogi Berra have ever achieved as a catcher.

If he maintains an average of 35 HR and 100 RBI per season for another eight years, Raleigh could end his career with 400 HR and a WAR above 55 – numbers that would almost guarantee a Hall of Fame ticket.

“If the Mariners win the World Series with Raleigh at the helm, his name will be etched in history,” – ESPN commented.

With Raleigh, the Mariners have not only found power – they have found identity. A team once considered an “outsider” in the AL West is now back on top, and leading the way is a catcher who wears his cap backward, smiles kindly, and swings like Thor’s hammer.

When asked how he feels after his historic season, Raleigh just smiles:

“I don’t think I did anything extraordinary. I just played the Seattle way – hard, straight, and without fear of doubt.”

From underrated player to record-breaking superstar, Cal Raleigh isn’t just saving the Mariners – he’s redefining the entire catcher position in the modern era.

And if his home runs continue to fly over the walls at T-Mobile Park, perhaps Cooperstown will someday have a wing dedicated to it:
