When the defending World Series champions make the rumor mill, people notice. And this one has fans — and front offices — talking.
Multiple league sources have hinted that the Texas Rangers could explore trade possibilities involving Josh Jung and Jake Burger, two of their most intriguing young infielders. While nothing is close to finalized, the very idea of moving either has sent shockwaves through baseball circles.
It’s a surprising development, especially for a team that has built its recent success around youth, power, and clubhouse chemistry. Jung, 27, was once viewed as the future face of the franchise — a homegrown third baseman with power, patience, and leadership qualities. Burger, 29, was brought in for his explosive bat and emotional edge, quickly becoming a fan favorite.
So why even entertain the idea of trading them?
The answer may lie in timing — and depth.
The Rangers have an overloaded infield mix heading into 2026, with Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, and Nathaniel Lowe locked into long-term roles. The return of top prospects like Sebastian Walcott and Justin Foscue adds even more crowding to the roster. According to one AL executive, Texas might see an opportunity to flip proven bats for high-end pitching or long-term control pieces.
“This feels more like strategy than panic,” said one rival GM. “They’re not selling. They’re repositioning. If you can move Jung or Burger for a top arm, you do it — even if it hurts.”
Indeed, pitching remains the Rangers’ biggest long-term concern. With Max Scherzer nearing the end of his career and Jacob deGrom’s health uncertain, the front office is expected to pursue controllable starters aggressively.
Possible trade partners? Several teams stand out.
The Miami Marlins, who have a surplus of young pitching but need offensive depth, could be a match. The Giants, now retooling their lineup under Buster Posey’s leadership, might also be in play. And don’t rule out the Tigers or Red Sox, both of whom are rumored to be searching for power at the corners.
Still, dealing Jung or Burger wouldn’t come without backlash. Both players have become emotionally tied to the Rangers’ resurgence — particularly Jung, who was part of the team’s championship core. His clutch moments in the postseason still echo in Arlington.
“Josh represents everything this organization has built — toughness, patience, professionalism,” said manager Bruce Bochy. “He’s part of our DNA.”
But Bochy also knows baseball is business. The Rangers’ front office, led by Chris Young, has shown it’s unafraid to make bold, headline-grabbing moves — from signing Seager and Semien to landing deGrom.
If trading Jung or Burger means extending their championship window, emotion may have to take a back seat.
Still, fans aren’t ready to see either player go. “You can’t trade the heart of your team,” one fan wrote on X. “Jung bleeds Rangers blue. Burger plays like his life depends on it.”
For now, the noise is just that — noise. But in Arlington, where championships have raised both expectations and pressure, anything feels possible.
