The trickle of Red Sox front office executives leaving the organization continued Tuesday with the news that Devin Pearson, the team’s director of amateur scouting, is joining the Washington Nationals as an assistant GM, an industry source confirmed.
In Washington, Pearson will report to Paul Toboni, the Nats’ new president of baseball operations who was also hired away from the Red Sox last month. Toboni had been an assistant GM with the Red Sox and was in line to be promoted to GM before the Nationals offered him a position with more power and responsibility.
While with the Sox, Toboni once held the job Pearson is leaving — among others. And like Toboni, Pearson played college baseball at the University of California. The two were teammates for one season — when Pearson was a freshman and Toboni a senior.
Pearson helped run the Red Sox’ last three drafts, during which time the organization drafted the likes of Payton Tolle, Kyle Teel and Kristian Campbell.
He first joined the Red Sox in 2017 and also served as an assistant of amateur scouting and assistant director of amateur scouting, the later under Toboni.
The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier was the first to report the news.
