BOSTON — The Red Sox may finally be ready to return to the deep end of the trade pool.
ESPN’s Buster Olney reported this week that Boston is “well-positioned” to make a serious push for Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal — one of baseball’s most dominant left-handers and arguably the most coveted arm on the market.
It’s a rumor that feels both bold and believable.
Skubal, 29, has quietly become one of MLB’s elite pitchers. He posted a sub-3.00 ERA across the past two seasons, pairing a mid-90s fastball with one of the sharpest sliders in the game. His 2025 campaign saw him strike out more than 200 batters while finishing among the league leaders in WHIP and FIP — a true frontline ace entering his prime.
For the Red Sox, the timing couldn’t be more urgent. After consecutive disappointing seasons defined by inconsistency and injuries, Boston’s rotation has been its greatest weakness — and its biggest opportunity for redemption.
Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has made it clear that the club intends to build a sustainable pitching core around young arms like Brayan Bello and Kutter Crawford, but adding a legitimate No. 1 starter could instantly change the Red Sox’s identity.
“Skubal is the kind of pitcher who can alter a team’s entire competitive timeline,” one AL executive told The Athletic. “He’s not just an upgrade. He’s a statement.”
Of course, acquiring him would come at a steep price. The Tigers are under no pressure to move their ace, who remains under team control through 2026. That means Boston would have to part with at least two top prospects — possibly names like Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony, or Ceddanne Rafaela — depending on how aggressive Breslow wants to be.
But Boston’s farm system, rebuilt through years of patient development, finally has the depth to support a deal like this. “They can afford it now,” said one rival GM. “The Red Sox are one of the few teams that can make that kind of call and not gut their future completely.”
Beyond numbers and negotiations, there’s a narrative at play here — one Boston fans know well. Ever since Chris Sale’s departure and the team’s post-2018 unraveling, Fenway Park has waited for a new pitching savior. Someone who can bring back the dominance, the fear, the fire.
Skubal fits that mold perfectly: tough, emotional, fearless.
In Detroit, he’s been the anchor of a young, rebuilding team. But with the Tigers entering yet another transitional phase, sources say they are “listening” to offers — not actively shopping him, but aware that his value may never be higher.
