Comerica Park Falls Silent as Tarik Skubal’s Errant Pitch Sends David Fry to Hospital
DETROIT — What began as a critical late-season matchup between two American League Central contenders turned somber in an instant. A fastball from Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal rode too far inside, striking Cleveland Guardians catcher David Fry in the face during the sixth inning of Tuesday night’s 5–2 loss. The crowd of more than 30,000 at Comerica Park went silent as medical staff rushed to Fry’s side.
The pitch, clocked at 99 mph, left Fry sprawled near home plate. After several tense minutes, he was helped onto a stretcher and transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation. The Guardians later reported that Fry was conscious and undergoing further tests, but no immediate details were provided.

Skubal, who has emerged as one of the league’s top left-handers this season, was visibly shaken. He removed his cap and paced behind the mound while players from both teams knelt in concern. “You never want to see that,” Skubal said quietly after the game. “It’s a terrible feeling. I just hope he’s okay.”
The incident clearly affected the Tigers’ ace. Though he finished the inning, Skubal struggled with command and was charged with five runs—his worst outing in weeks. Detroit’s offense offered little support, managing only a pair of late runs as the Guardians pulled even with the Tigers atop the division standings.
Manager A.J. Hinch praised Skubal’s composure but acknowledged the emotional toll. “Tarik’s a competitor, but he cares deeply about the game and the people in it,” Hinch said. “That was a frightening moment for everyone on the field.”
Inside the clubhouse, teammates described a subdued atmosphere. Several players said Skubal lingered in the dugout long after the final out, quietly checking for updates on Fry’s condition. “It weighs on you,” said infielder Zach McKinstry. “You throw hundreds of pitches a season, but one like that stays with you.”
The Tigers, who had spent much of September atop the AL Central, now find themselves tied with the Guardians as the regular season winds down. Yet the night’s most important storyline had little to do with standings.
Across social media, fans of both clubs shared messages of support for Fry and compassion for Skubal. One post read simply, “Baseball can wait—get well soon, David.” Another added, “Tarik’s heart is as big as his fastball. Hoping both players find peace tonight.”
As Detroit prepares for the next game, the focus remains on Fry’s recovery and the emotional recovery of a pitcher who never imagined his best fastball could lead to such a frightening moment.
