SAN FRANCISCO — The St. Louis Cardinals’ October dreams are officially over. Wednesday night, at Oracle Park, the Cardinals fell 4-3 to the San Francisco Giants, officially eliminating them from the 2025 MLB postseason race.
The game was dramatic down to the final pitches, but once again, the Cardinals could not find a win to keep their hopes alive. With this loss, the St. Louis team fell out of the wild-card race, ending a turbulent season.
“We fought until the end, but sometimes baseball is cruel,” pitcher Sonny Gray said after the game. “It hurts to know that the season ends this way, but I’m proud of the effort of the whole team.”
Throughout the season, the Cardinals have been inconsistent, especially in the bullpen and in scoring in key situations. While stars like Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt have had their moments, the lack of depth in the lineup and key injuries have been major roadblocks.
Arenado, who was once hopeful of leading the Cardinals back to glory, couldn’t hide his disappointment: “I hate this feeling. The fans deserve to see us play in October. We need to change, we need to come back stronger.”
The Cardinals’ early exit once again confirms that the team is entering a transition period. After the retirement of legendary Adam Wainwright, the void in the locker room and on the field has not really been filled. Meanwhile, the pressure on the board and the owner is growing as fans wait for strong moves in the upcoming offseason transfer market.
The Cardinals, one of the most storied teams in MLB with 11 World Series titles, now find themselves without them in October. The question is: will the management be bold enough to make a significant change, or will the team continue to struggle in a cycle of disappointment?
While the Giants celebrate their victory and move closer to the postseason, the Cardinals must face the reality that the 2025 season is over. A bittersweet ending, but also the beginning of bold changes.
