NEW YORK — Two photos, two times, two lives — but one emotion. A bright-eyed boy who trembled when he met his idol Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees years ago has now grown up to become the star of the U.S. Soccer team – Matt Turner. And more than 20 years later, under the bright lights of the World Series, they stood side by side again — this time as two men, two symbols of American faith and aspiration.
“I will never forget that day,” Turner shared, choking up. “I was just a little kid in an old Yankees cap, and Derek leaned down and said, ‘Believe in yourself, kid.’ I carried that with me all my life.”

Matt Turner was 9 years old at the time. He came to Yankee Stadium with his father, hoping to see his idol in person. When Derek Jeter — the Yankees captain and a hero to the entire city — smiled and posed for a picture with Turner, little did he know that moment would change the boy’s future.
Two decades later, Turner has written his own journey: from an unknown player who was not selected in the MLS Draft, to the position of number one goalkeeper for the US national team, representing the country’s pride at the World Cup.
A thorny path, just like Derek Jeter began — with faith, discipline, and a pure love for the sport.
When the two reunited at the 2025 World Series, it was not just Yankees fans or American soccer fans who were moved. The entire social network seemed to “explode” when the photo of Turner and Jeter standing next to each other was shared tens of thousands of times.
On one side was Jeter — the legendary 5-time World Series champion, 14-time All-Star, more than 3,400 hits in his career. On the other side was Turner — the young goalkeeper who inspired a new generation of American players, with a story of faith and determination to never give up.

“It’s unbelievable, right?” Jeter said with a gentle smile. “Time flies. Yesterday he was a kid wearing a Yankees cap, today he’s a national hero. That’s what makes sports so beautiful.”
There could be no better scenario for this moment: on the biggest stage of baseball, a legend and a “fan from the past” reunited.
There is no longer a gap between idol and fan — only the belief that the American dream is still real, that every boy who stood outside the fence can one day walk inside, with a heart as strong and eyes as bright as Turner did.
“If Derek hadn’t talked to me that day, I probably would have given up on football a long time ago,” Turner confessed. “He’s not just a symbol of the Yankees — he’s a symbol of people who never stop believing in good things.”

The two photos — more than 20 years apart — are now placed side by side on social media, touching millions of people. A circle has been completed: the child who admired him has grown up to stand next to his idol.
From the Yankees to the World Cup, from Jeter’s dream to Turner’s belief — sports still proves one thing:
The dream never goes out of style. And sometimes, just one photo… is enough to remind the world why we love sports so much.
