Detroit — The baseball world has just experienced a profound loss when Tom Timmermann, the legendary former Detroit Tigers pitcher, passed away at the age of 79. The sad news shocked the entire Tigers community, but for Tarik Skubal, the young star who shouldered the responsibilities of 1B pitching, it was an emotional shock, a strong reminder of the value of faith, leadership and the legacy of those who came before.
In a special interview shortly after Timmermann’s passing, Skubal couldn’t hide his emotions: “He used to tell me a lot of things… ‘Play hard for the Tigers, Tarik. For the team, for the fans, and for yourself.’ Those words always resonated with me every time I stepped onto the field. He’s gone now, but his legacy and teachings will live on forever.” Skubal’s voice choked up, his eyes filled with tears as he remembered the man who was an icon of Detroit in the late 60s and early 70s.
Tom Timmermann played for the Tigers from 1969 to 1973, leaving a deep mark on the team’s history. In 1970, Timmermann set a record of 61 starts in a season and was voted “Tiger of the Year” by the Detroit Chapter of the BBWAA. For many players who came after him, he was not only a legend with impressive statistics, but also a spiritual mentor, a model of perseverance, will and love for the Tigers.
Skubal shared that Timmermann used to call and text him to encourage him when he felt pressured before important seasons. “I remember one afternoon he texted: ‘It’s not always going to be easy, but believe in yourself and love the team. The fans, your teammates and the Tigers history are behind you.’ Those words have now become a precious spiritual legacy for me.”

Timmermann’s passing left many former teammates, fans and current players like Skubal in silence with grief. Photos of Timmermann in a Tigers uniform, his gentle smile and determined gaze, have become a symbol not only of Detroit but also of timeless baseball values: fighting spirit, loyalty to the team and a burning passion for the field.
For Skubal, the loss is a reminder of the great responsibility that rests on the shoulders of a young Tigers pitcher: “Every time I step on the field, I think of him. I want to play not only for myself, but to honor what he built for the team, for the Tigers history. He planted the seed of belief and now I have to keep it alive.”
The Detroit Tigers community on social media is flooded with condolences and memories of Timmermann. Fans expressed: “He was a legend, but more than that, he inspired generations to come, including Tarik Skubal. Every time Skubal threw, we saw Tom there.”
The event was not only a personal loss for Skubal, but also a reminder of the value of those who have gone before him in sports. In the eyes of the young star, Timmermann will live on forever — in every pitch, every message, and in the hearts of every Tigers fan.
“He will always be with me,” Skubal choked up. “Every pitch, every win, I dedicate to him… to Tom Timmermann, the legend that will never die.”
