The Toronto Blue Jays have just revealed a surprising possibility: they could enter the race for a top reliever if they finally find a replacement for Hoffman — according to General Manager Ross Atkins. Hoffman recorded 33 saves last season at Rogers Centre, but also showed some weaknesses in the closer role.
Atkins makes no secret of his ambition: “The great thing about Jeff is he’s not tied to the closer role,” he said. “He’s willing to do whatever it takes to make the team better.”

That flexibility in thinking could pave the way for adding a high-pressure pitcher — a decision that could reshape the Blue Jays’ second half of the season.
Moving Hoffman to a setup role makes strategic sense. It not only takes the pressure off him — but also gives the Blue Jays an opportunity to look for a closer “from above.” With talent like Edwin Díaz and Robert Suárez on the market, the possibility of spending “deep” is entirely possible.
If they choose to be more financially tolerant, names like Raisel Iglesias, Pete Fairbanks, Ryan Helsley or Devin Williams are also being considered.
On the other hand, adding depth to the bullpen is not just a matter of cost — it is a way for the Blue Jays to prepare for a long-term scenario in the race for the championship. If Hoffman suddenly falters, or has physical problems, they can still flexibly rotate without being greatly affected.
This decision also has potential risks. Investing heavily in a new closer means the Blue Jays must have absolute confidence in his ability to maintain high performance. At the same time, Hoffmann, if he changes roles, will also need to adapt quickly to prove his value as an effective setup man.
With this in mind, it’s clear that the Blue Jays aren’t afraid to “take a big risk” to upgrade their roster. Will they choose to continue trusting Hoffman or spend big on a new closer? Whichever direction they choose, one thing is clear: the team is preparing for a strategic move that fans can’t ignore.
