The Toronto Blue Jays have just shocked the free agency market by arming the centerpiece – Anthony Santander. According to the official announcement, Santander signed a 5-year contract with a salary of 92.5 million USD, a decision that marks the team’s great ambition to increase its offensive power.

Santander, 30 years old, has emerged as a true “two-way” pitcher – someone who can hit both hands (switch-hitter), and is especially strong in the ability to hit bombs (home-run). In the 2024 season with the Baltimore Orioles, he hit 44 home runs, an achievement that earned him his first All-Star selection and the Silver Slugger award.
The contract between Santander and the Blue Jays also includes flexible terms such as opt-out after the third year, along with a sixth-year extension option, pushing the total value up to 110 million USD.

This shows that the Blue Jays have a lot of confidence in his long-term contribution.
General manager Ross Atkins said that signing Santander was one of the “optimal moves” to add a strong hit in the middle of the lineup, where the team is still looking for a spearhead enough to lead.
However, Santander’s first season in Toronto has not gone smoothly. He has been injured, and recently MLB approved his withdrawal from the postseason due to back problems.

This is a big shock, because fans had high expectations for his explosive performance after joining the Jays.
However, with his inherent power potential, Santander is still considered the “power piece” that the Blue Jays have been looking for for many seasons. If he comes back strong enough, this could be a big turning point for the team to move towards higher goals – titles, glory and affirmation.
