The New England Patriots are showing real interest in Miami Dolphins edge rusher Jaelen Phillips, but there’s a major obstacle standing in their way — the Philadelphia Eagles.
According to league insiders, New England has quietly explored potential trade packages for Phillips as they look to boost a defense that’s struggled to generate consistent pressure this season. However, any pursuit could quickly turn into a bidding war — one the Patriots are unlikely to win.
A Star Within the Division
Phillips, a former first-round pick out of Miami, has flashed elite pass-rush ability when healthy. Despite battling injuries early in his career, he’s become one of the AFC East’s most disruptive young defenders, capable of collapsing pockets and forcing turnovers.
For the Patriots, who have been desperate for an impact edge player since losing Matthew Judon to injury, Phillips represents exactly the kind of athleticism and explosiveness they’ve been missing. Yet prying him away from a division rival is a tall order — and doing it without overpaying might be impossible.
Eagles in Full Super Bowl Mode
That’s where the Eagles come in. Philadelphia, fresh off another NFC title run, are reportedly “all-in” on another Super Bowl push and have the draft capital — and urgency — to make a deal happen. General manager Howie Roseman has a track record of aggressive midseason moves, and with Haason Reddick’s contract situation uncertain, adding Phillips could fortify their front for the playoff stretch.
“The Eagles are in win-now mode,” one NFC executive told NFL Network. “If it turns into a bidding war, they’ll simply offer more than New England can afford.”
What It Means for New England
The Patriots, meanwhile, are in a transitional phase. They’ve been reluctant to part with high draft picks and are focusing on building a younger, more sustainable roster. A blockbuster trade for Phillips would make headlines — but might not fit their long-term strategy under the current front office.
Still, the mere fact that New England is exploring such a move shows they recognize the urgency to retool a defense that has struggled to find its identity.
If Phillips hits the market, expect the Patriots to call — but don’t be surprised when the Eagles swoop in first.
