NEW YORK – In a decision that has been easy for both the baseball community and Yankees fans, Yankees legend Jorge Posada has turned down plans to build a $1.5 million statue for himself. Instead, the money will be donated to a Bronx youth center that supports disadvantaged children and teens, opening a new chapter in the baseball star’s sense of compassion and social responsibility.
“Fame and statues are seen with the eyes, but actions are felt with the heart,” Posada said at a special press conference today. “I want this money to really change the lives of kids in the Bronx, giving them opportunity, hope, and confidence in the future.”
The monument was originally proposed by a group of fans and donors who wanted to recognize Posada’s great contributions to the Yankees over a career spanning more than two decades.
